Ebensee
Like many other communities, Ebensee faces gender imbalances in various aspects of daily life. To commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8th, the Frauen*forum brought together diverse stakeholders and interest groups to discuss topics related to gender, transportation, and mobility. The event gathered women committed to achieving greater fairness, safety, and inclusion in mobility throughout Ebensee – individuals ready to get actively involved in creating positive change.
Through the FairMobility project, the town is implementing practical solutions to make public spaces more welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Walking in Someone Else's Shoes
The Frauen*forum Salzkammergut hosted this special awareness event. Participants examined real-life situations faced by women and worked together to identify mobility barriers and develop practical solutions. The experience became even more meaningful when attendees had the opportunity to navigate the town using wheelchairs and walkers themselves.
The exercise was eye-opening. What seemed like minor inconveniences suddenly became major obstacles – a single small step turned into a significant challenge, and curbs at street crossings became nearly impossible to navigate. The experience highlighted just how many barriers exist in everyday public spaces for people with physical limitations.
Walking in Someone Else's Shoes
After their journey through town, the group gathered at the newly installed “Herzerl-Bank,” which was ceremonially inaugurated by Mayor Sabine Promberger and the project team.
Located in front of the war memorial at the Kaiserbrücke, this bench, made possible through sponsor support, offers a place to rest and watch the world go by. It represents just one of several initiatives designed to make public spaces more inviting for pedestrians and to breathe new life into overlooked areas of the town.
European Model Community
FairMobility is a European project in which Ebensee serves as a model community alongside Creil, a suburb of Paris. In both locations, solutions are being developed and tested that can also be implemented in other rural regions.
Through this collaborative effort, Ebensee is working to ensure that all residents – regardless of age, physical ability, or gender – can move freely and safely through their community, while simultaneously revitalizing “forgotten places” and making the town more pedestrian-friendly.
